RAY D. CARTER Staunton, VA... Ray Dilling Carter, 86, husband of Goldie Mae (Roberts) Carter of Staunton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, April 23, 2018. Mr. Carter was born on May 27, 1931 in Bath County, Virginia, the son of the late Joseph Edward and Mae Romelia (Swearengin) Carter. He retired from Smith's Transfer as a mechanic. Ray loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. He was a determined man in all he did. He was a fanatical collector of all different kinds of clocks, big or small and enjoyed tinkering on them. He loved NASCAR and going to Antique Car Shows. He was especially fond of Fords and showing his cars that he had throughout the years. In addition to his wife, a day shy of 70 years, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dallin “Dale” Ray and his wife, Judith; Edward Cleveland and his wife, Nancy; three grandchildren, Treva Mae Marshall and her husband, Rusty; Shawna Lee Armstrong and her husband, David; Jason Ilo Carter and his wife, April; seven great grandchildren, Brandon Edward and Devin Ray Mauzy, Cheyenne Lee, Dillin Ive and Brayden Carter Armstrong, Jacob Ilo and Rachael Sue Carter; a brother, Don Eugene Carter and Betty Lam; three sisters, Darlene Joy Wooddell, Hilda Gay Brinkley and Maxine Romelia Roberts; and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Ray was preceded in death by four brothers Leo Gray, Joseph Lee, Darrell Wayne and Roger Dale; and two sisters Mila Louise Kelly and Carolyn Mae Sams. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 27, 2018 at Henry Funeral Home from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 28, 2018 in Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren Church by Revs. Dennis Sites and Dave Dakin. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Jason Carter, Brandon Mauzy, Devin Mauzy, David Armstrong, Tracy Carter, D.W. Carter, and James Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be Junior Rowe, Leroy Roberts, John Quick, Joe Hunter, Lucky Knight, Rusty Marshall, Jerry Roberts, Gerald Carter, and Justin Carter. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of the Shenandoah and especially, Amy Eye for their care given to Ray during this time. A special thanks to Marie Thomas for all her visits and wonderful meals during this time. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
