Richard Kenneth Halterman

RICHARD KENNETH HALTERMAN HARRISONBURG, VA… Richard Kenneth Halterman peacefully graduated to heaven Sunday morning August 26, 2018.  He will be lovingly missed by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Roberts Halterman, his son Dick and his wife Sally, daughter Jennifer Halterman Keim and her husband Greg.  He also leaves behind six grandchildren Ben Halterman (Priscilla), Abe Halterman (Blair), Molly Harper (Ryan), Josh, Seth and Sarah Keim and six great grandchildren Annalee, Stella, Hattie, Georgia, Kemper and Lucy, two step-sisters Carolyn Halterman Toms and Kay Halterman Ferguson (Gary) as well as step mother Margaret Collins Halterman, a sister-in-law Dorothy Sensabaugh (Glenn), a brother-in-law, Forrest Arehart, and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his father Alfred Kenneth Halterman and his mother, Ruth Rowzie Halterman, one sister, Arlene Fern Halterman Houser, one brother Francis Lewis Halterman, a sister-in-law Betty Arehart. Richard was born in Rockbridge County on August 7, 1926, but spent his entire life living in and around Augusta County, working at the Virginia Lime Grinding Plant for 5 years, Westinghouse Electric (now known as McQuay) for 20 years and his favorite of all jobs for 42 years, as a real estate agent in the Staunton area. He also served in the United State Air Force where he gained proficiency in Morse code which he never forgot.  During his tenure in real estate, he proudly served as President of the Board of Realtors.  He and Margaret were regular attenders of St. Paul’s United Methodist church and Victory Worship Center where he served as an Usher and Financial Secretary. He truly was a very optimistic person who always tried to turn everything into a positive and always left you with a “love ya” when saying goodbye.  He will always be remembered for his impeccable memory citing historical facts, dates and people with amazing accuracy until the day he died.  He also developed a tradition of writing a poem for each of his six grandchildren for every birthday until they turned 18 that will never be forgotten.  He loved people, and after 42 years in the real estate business had numerous clients and realtor associates who all remember him fondly. A celebration of his life will be Thursday, August 30, 3PM at St. Paul’s United Methodist church in Staunton, VA conducted by grandson Abe Halterman and assisted by all his grandchildren. The visitation will be after the service from 4 PM until 6 PM.  Feel free to drop by even if you cannot make the 3 PM service. Burial will be private before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Valley Young Life (PO Box 492, Staunton, VA 22402).
