ROBERT M. LARNER STAUNTON, VA Robert Miller Larner, 89, husband of Janet Myrtle Lytle Larner, of Staunton passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 9, 2014. He was born September 17, 1924, in Augusta County, a son of the late Herbert Allen and Elizabeth (Miller) Larner. Mr. Larner was an active service veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served with the 393rd Fighter Bomber Squadron and spent 1 ½ years in the European Theater during WWII. He served 20 years in the Air Force Reserves and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. He retired after 40 years from VDOT having worked directly with the completion of I-64, I-81, and I-66 in the Staunton district. He was a loyal lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church and he was a past Vestry member. Robert was very devoted to his family. He enjoyed cutting wood, farming, and other outdoor activities with his son, Tom. Kathy's was his favorite local hangout with family and friends. In addition to his wife of 43 years, family members include a daughter, Susanna M. Larner; a beloved granddaughter, Mackenzie; Angela Larner and Andrew Deitz; two sisters-in-law, Irene East Larner and Ann Lytle; a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Larner; two brothers, Herbert Allen Larner, Jr. and William Starke Larner; a sister, Gertrude Cushing Larner Robson; and a niece, Elizabeth Cushing Robson Cooney. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014, in Trinity Episcopal Church by the Rev. Dr. Paul Nancarrow. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Kathy's 9:00 a.m. Coffee Club. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, in the Henry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mackenzie Larner Scholarship Fund, 27 Redbud Hollow Lane, Staunton, VA 24401 or to the Long-term Maintenance Fund, Trinity Episcopal Church.
