Shuk Fong Ng Wong

STAUNTON, VA…. WONG, SHUK FONG NG, 80, of Staunton, Virginia, departed this life peacefully, at home in the presence of those she loved and who loved her on March 2, 2017. She was born on December 21, 1936, in Taishan County, Guangdong, China. Shuk met and married her husband, Bock Jun Wong in Hong Kong in 1961. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1962, and   their two sons, Shawn and Hubie soon followed. Shuk and Bock’s pursuit of the American Dream took them on an odyssey across the US, with stops in San Francisco, Utah, Arizona and New York. In 1973 the Wongs came across an opportunity to open their own restaurant in Staunton, Virginia, and so they did. But the same year the Chinaline Restaurant opened, it was destroyed in an electrical fire, which also engulfed the Wong’s upstairs home. Safe but shaken, the family had lost everything in the blaze. Shuk and Bock nearly moved back to New York to make a fresh start, but that was not to be. In the wake of the fire, the outpouring of support for the Wongs from the local community deeply moved Shuk, and she decided that Staunton was home. Back on their feet by 1974, Shuk and her husband opened Wong’s Restaurant and operated it for more than two decades. For all those years, Wong’s was an institution in Staunton. And if you were a regular, Shuk knew you … perhaps not by name, but certainly by your favorite dish. In the years that followed, Shuk became a doting grandmother and aunt who was lovingly called Yin Yin (meaning “grandmother on the father’s side” in Chinese) by her grandchildren and others close and dear to her. In addition to spending time with her grandchildren (and all children), Shuk loved cooking, knitting, gardening and working her puzzles. Her love for her family was immeasurable as was her generosity. Shuk seemed to live her life by the words of an ancient Chinese proverb, If you always give, you will always have. Shuk is preceded by her husband, Bock Jun Wong and brother Weldon Ng. She is survived by son Shawn (Annie), son Hubie (Jean), and grandchildren Molly and Andrew, sister Sue Yee, brother Ken Wing Ng (Yan) and sister-in-law Rebecca Wong. The family would like to thank the UVA dialysis team at Augusta Health and in Staunton, as well as the countless doctors and nurses at Augusta Health they came to know over the last 17 years. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 5 at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in New York.
