SOPHIE H. BROWN STAUNTON, VA Sophie Virginia (Howard) Brown, 76, widow of Henry Brown, of 702 Elizabeth Miller Gardens, departed this life on Monday, May 23, 2011 at Augusta Health, Fishersville. She was born November 4, 1934, in Nelson County, a daughter of the late John A. and Callie (Clark) Howard. Prior to retirement, Mrs. Brown was employed by Stuart Hall. She was a member of Mt. Salem Baptist Church. In addition to her second husband, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Miller. Family members include a son, James W. Miller, Jr. of Staunton; two daughters, Carolyn Miller of Dover, Delaware and Linda Randolph of Staunton; three brothers and a sister-in-law, William Howard of Waynesboro, Willis Howard and Robert and Darlene Howard, all of Staunton; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mable and Robert Hill, Barbara Bryant, Judy and Samuel Lemons, all of Staunton, and Sandra Johnson of Durham, NC; thirty one grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren; special friends, Carl Organ of Staunton and Florine McCove of Dover, Delaware. In addition to her second husband, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James W. Miller; a brother, Raymond Howard; and two sisters, Elizabeth Crawford and Callie Amos. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, in Mt. Salem Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Miles. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be William Jones, Jerry Williams, Leroy Johnson, Doug Simmons, Harry Lee Toye, Chuck Dunnings, and Jerry Venable. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, in the Henry Funeral Home and other times at 1731 Spring Hill Road. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Ms. Jeanette Saunders.
