VASHTI H. CLEMMER STAUNTON, VA… Vashti Norwood (Hammer) Clemmer, 103, widow of Raymond Lawson “Buck” Clemmer, of Staunton, died Friday, November 4, 2016, in Brookdale Assisted Living. She was born December 10, 1912, in Rockingham County, a daughter of the late Dr. Alfred and Sadie Pearle (Foster) Hammer. She was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army WAC’s. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where she did the children’s hour during the worship service. Family members include three nieces, India Strickler of Harrisonburg, Barbara Laverty of Las Vegas, NV, and Dale Eavers and Roy of Stuarts Draft; four nephews and their spouses, Lee and Linda Hammer of Keezletown, Benny and Dawn Hammer of Grottoes, Joseph and Louise Butler of McGaheysville, Van and Debbie Pence of Warrenton, and a nephew, Kenny Bosserman of Staunton; a number of great nieces and nephews; a number of great, great nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Jackie Armstrong, Rick Huffman, and Jane Armstrong, her mail lady; friends and caregivers at Brookdale; and her friends at Kroger’s and Kathy’s Restaurant. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Rebekah Butler, Peggy Pence, and Susanna Taylor and three brothers, Ludwell Hammer, Kenneth Hammer, and Harry Hammer. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 in Thornrose Cemetery by the Rev. Kenneth Beals.
