VERNON A. GREENAWALT GREENVILLE, VA Vernon Arthur Greenawalt, 92, husband of Dorothy (Talbott) Greenawalt, died Friday, May 6, 2011, at his residence. He was born March 30, 1919, in Kline, WV, a son of the late David Andrew and Clara (Alexander) Greenawalt. Mr. Greenawalt was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force and served in Burma, China, and India during World War II. Vernon attended Berea College in Kentucky and had a Masters Degree in forest pathology from the University of Michigan and a Masters Degree in pharmacology from the Medical College of Virginia. He loved the outdoors and spending time hiking, fishing, camping, and taking care of his Christmas tree farm. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a U.S. Forester and later as a pharmacist for 30 years and was co-owner of Peoples Pharmacy in Stuarts Draft. He was a member of Greenville United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Stuarts Draft VFW, the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association, the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Lions Club, and was active in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Organization, where he mentored Patrick Guffey and Steven Carter. In addition to his wife, family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Rev. David James and Elizabeth Greenawalt, of Prattville, Alabama; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah (Greenawalt) and Gene Straley of Harrisonburg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Ruth Greenawalt of Harrisonburg, and Forest and Rachel Greenawalt of Burbonnais, Illinois; a sister, Twila Greenawalt Muterspaugh of Harrisonburg; a sister-in-law, Arvella Greenawalt of Upper Tract, WV; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Jonathan, Rosemarie, Kaitlyn, and Nathan Greenawalt, Rebecca and Andrew Straley; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Willie, Carl, Fred, and Hugh; and a sister, Geneva; and grandchildren, Allison and Thomas Straley. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (May 10, 2011) in Greenville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Harris. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday (May 9, 2011) in Henry Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O.
