STAUNTON, VA Wallace William Smiley, 86, husband of Shirley (Gibson) Smiley of 48 Shutterlee Mill Lane, died Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at his residence. He was born on May 12, 1928 in Rockbridge County, the son of the late James D., Sr., and Willie Mae (Fox) Smiley of Raphine. Mr. Smiley served five years in the U.S. Navy on the USS Bataan, during the Korean conflict, retired from Western State Hospital with twenty-five years of service, and then worked at Dixie Gas and Oil Corp. for a number of years. He loved gardening and was a "man of the earth". In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by two daughters, Gay Melynn Chandler and Gena Mae Burguron, both of Staunton; three grandchildren, Nathan Campbell, Jeremy Burguron and April Place; three great grandchildren, Elijah Burguron, Caleb Campbell, and William Williams; a brother, Joe B. Smiley, Sr., of Rockbridge Baths; five sisters, Maxine Nutty, Phyllis Gibson, Betty Huffman and Patsy Crosby, all of Staunton, and Alice Shull of Fairfield; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Smiley and Dee Smiley; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Michael Dwayne and Wallace William, Jr.; three brothers, James, Jr., Kenneth and Samuel Smiley. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 9, 2015 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Campbell of Calvary Baptist Church. Military honors will be conducted by the Augusta-Staunton V.F.W. Post #2216. Burial will be private at a later date at New Providence Presbyterian Church, Raphine. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Sunday, March 8, 2015 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Providence Church Cemetery Fund, 1209 New Providence Road, Raphine, VA 24472 or to Calvary Baptist Church, 105 Garland Drive, Staunton, VA 24401.
