STAUNTON, VA Walter Hume Collins, Jr., 91, husband of Carolyn (Botkin) Collins, of Staunton, died Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Brookdale. He was born April 3, 1924, in Staunton, a son of the late Walter H. Collins, Sr. and Edna (Hays) Collins. Mr. Collins was a veteran of the United States Navy and served in South America during World War II. His home station was Natal, Brazil. He was much honored that his squadron received the prestigious Presidential Unit Citation signed by President Harry Truman. He retired after 50 years from Mackey Vending, which is now known as Canteen Vending Services, as a supervisor. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Staunton. In addition to his wife of 65 years, family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Denny and Jane Collins of Surfside Beach, SC; two sisters, Jeane Campfield of Staunton and Betty Critz of Fishersville; two granddaughters, Kassie Robinson and husband, Jacob, of Greensboro, NC and Kelly Karalunas and husband, Jared, of Ft. Mill, SC. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Della Campbell. A memorial service will conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, April 24, 2015 by Chaplain Murphy Terry in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery with graveside rites by Augusta-Staunton VFW Post 2216. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
