Wayt Timberlake “Tim” Watterson SOUTH CAROLINA… Wayt Timberlake “Tim” Watterson passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 18, 2018 after battling brain cancer since early in the year. A funeral service will be held at Trinity Church in Staunton Thursday July 26 at 2 p.m. Tim was many things: a loving father and grandfather, an educator, a lawyer, a mediator, a golfer, a life-long learner, and a great intellectual and conversationalist. There was nothing Tim loved more than sharing a bottle of wine and a nice meal with family and friends. Tim was born in 1943 in Cleveland to John Sayle and Emily Timberlake Watterson, late of Charlottesville, where he grew up with his brothers John and Stuart. He attended Williams College in Williamstown, MA and after serving in the Coast Guard earned a Masters of City and Regional Planning from UNC Chapel Hill. Tim married Roberta Smith in 1972 in San Antonio and they moved to Philadelphia for Tim to work on his Ph.D at Penn. It was there that Tim’s son Ian was born before the family moved to Seattle, where daughter Bergen was born and Tim raised his family. Active everywhere he lived, Tim cared deeply for people and communities and worked for them always; professionally and in his life and volunteer work. After a long career in public service, Tim earned a law degree from Seattle University and worked in Environmental Law for Perkins Coie before beginning full-time volunteer work. Retiring to Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, Tim and Roberta dove into their new community, though sadly Tim was widowed not two years after. Through church, golf, serving on the Sullivan’s Planning Commission, and pro-bono legal work, Tim loved and was dedicated to his new home and friends. But above all, Tim valued his children, grandchildren Knox and Arlie, his family, and his friends. His loving advice, support, wit, generosity, and gentle caring nature will be missed by all who knew him, particularly his children whom he loved deeply and was proud of. Though very sad, his family knows he will be remembered dearly by all those he touched in life. Tim is survived by his children, grandchildren, and brothers, John and Stuart, and a loving family in Virginia and elsewhere: his cousins Wayt and Mary Timberlake, who have been a great comfort and help through his illness and after, Francis and Clyde Meares, of Columbia, SC, and Sarah and Tom Mortimer and Dave and Cathy Watterson of Ohio.
