WILLIAM E. NICHOLAS CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA William Edmond Nicholas, 87, widower of Jacquelin (Lytton) Nicholas, formerly of Waynesboro, died Saturday, January 4, 2014, in Charlottesville. He was born April 16, 1926, in Jacksonville, Ohio. Mr. Nicholas was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Smith's Transfer in the position of National Claims Director. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Staunton, VA, where he served as an usher as well as on numerous boards. He was given Special Recognition at the University of Charleston's 2000 Hall of Fame ceremony for his play on the 1950 Golden Eagle baseball team. Family members include three children; David W. Nicholas and wife Martha of Charlottesville; Cherie L. Spivey and husband James of Martinsville, VA; and James E. Nicholas and wife Martha of Roanoke, VA. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Terri Langford and husband Jason, Scott Nicholas and wife Jennifer, Brian Nicholas and wife Daniela, Dr. Steven Spivey, Christopher Nicholas and wife Natalie, and Adam Nicholas. His grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and the children of the church kept him young at heart. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Gene Williams. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Graveside rites will be conducted by Staunton-Augusta VFW Post 2216 His grandchildren will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Page Harmon, Charlie Martin, Glenn Sytes, and John Barachie. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Paul's United Methodist Building Fund. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
