William Harvey Whistleman

WILLIAM H. WHISTLEMAN GREENVILLE, VA William Harvey Whistleman, 87, husband of Cleo (Proffitt) Whistleman, died Friday, March 22, 2013, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. He was born on October 18, 1925, in Staunton, to the late Charles Burton and Lida (Hodge) Whistleman. Mr. Whistleman served in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from Hajoca after 39 years of service. He was a member of Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church and VFW Post #2216. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Gary Lee Whistleman and his wife, Linda, of Staunton; two daughters, Susan Rebecca Long and her husband, John, of Staunton, and Jennifer Lynn Whistleman of Weyers Cave; a brother, Fred Chester Whistleman of Staunton; four grandchildren, Andrea Rhyne (Justin), Drew Bassett, Chelsea Whistleman, and Cody Whistleman (Ashley); and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Waldo Charles Whistleman, Lewis Henry Whistleman, and Leo Burton Whistleman; and a sister, Cleo Nelson Welch. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Russell Heinrich. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by Augusta-Staunton VFW Post #2216. Active pallbearers will be Steve Hayes, Drew Rhyne, Justin Rhyne, J. R. Bennett, Leon Cash, Gale Conner, and Tommy Conner. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013 at the funeral home and other times at the residence. There will be no public viewing. Memorials may be made to the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 260, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477.
