WILLIE R. SMITH MONETA, VA Willie Roy Smith, 93, of Moneta, made his journey home to Jesus on Monday, May 19, 2014, with family members by his side, at Hermitage in Roanoke. He was born April 12, 1921, in Churchville, the son of the late William Franklin and Bertie Lee (Snyder) Smith. He lived in Staunton until 2004, then moved to Smith Mountain Lake with his daughter and son-in-law. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Retiring after 40 years of service with VDOT, he continued to remain active. He loved planting flowers and working in the yard, line-dancing, and he was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Staunton for many years. After moving to Moneta, he joined Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he served as an usher until his health declined significantly over the past year. In addition to his wife, Susan Marie Jennings Smith, he was preceded in death by a brother, Marshall Smith; and two sisters, Ruby Harris and Nora Roberts. Family members include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shirley and David Swisher of Fredericksburg, Gail and Mike Dickerson of Moneta, and Judy Calloway of North Carolina; a sister, Anna Thompson of Staunton; six grandchildren, Dr. Eric Swisher of Roanoke, Justin Swisher, of Richmond, Christopher Dickerson of Harrisonburg, Michael Dickerson, Jr. of Elkton, Michael Lembo, and Sonya Dewhurst of Greenville; and nine great grandchildren, Paris Swisher, Mia Swisher, Alexis Dickerson, Addison Dickerson, Cole Dickerson, Allysa Lembo, Chelsea Lembo, Jamie Dewhurst, and Raylene Dewhurst. A graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon Friday, May 23, 2014, in Thornrose Cemetery by the Rev. David W. Lord. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 Noon on Friday in the Henry Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons and sons-in-law. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Moneta by the Rev. David W. Lord. Memorial donations may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 458, Moneta, VA 24121.
