STAUNTON, VA Dr. Z. S. (Dick) Dickerson, Jr. died on May 30, 2015 at Shenandoah House in Fishersville, Virginia. Dick was born in Prestonsburg, KY on November 21, 1919, the youngest child of Z. S. Dickerson, Sr. and Bertha Alley. He is predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Mildred and his only grandchild, Raymond J. Foster IV. Dick is survived by his children, son Richard Dickerson and his wife Nancy; and a daughter, Margaret D. Foster and her husband Raymond J. Foster III. He is also survived by his nephew Dudley Meadows and niece Patty Halfhill and her husband Charles. Dick was especially close to his late wife Mildred's family and is survived by her siblings William M. Gortney, Martha Robinson and her husband Jim, Margaret Tapp, Monnie Talley and her husband Brooks, first cousin Regan Phillips and his wife Phyllis, and many nieces and nephews in the Gortney family. Dick was a veteran of World War II having served in Patton's Third Army in Europe. He spent a majority of his life preparing for and teaching in Business Education. He was the head of the Business Education Department at James Madison University for 28 years. A private family burial will be held in Kentucky at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the James Madison University Foundation, Inc., directed to the Dr. and Mrs. Z.S. Dickerson Scholarship in the College of Education, James Madison University, 220 University Blvd., MSC 3606, Harrisonburg, VA 22807, or to Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939. Dick's family would like to thank the entire staff of Shenandoah House and Hospice of the Shenandoah for the loving care provided to him. The family would also like to thank Dad's caregiver, Kay McDonough, for her love and support in recent years. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
