Ada H. Campbell

Ada Anne Hevener Campbell, 75, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

She will be remembered for a life of family devotion and community service, and for her selfless nature and caring for others.

She was born on May 29, 1949, at Kings Daughters Hospital in Staunton, VA to the late Virgil Lee Hevener, Sr. and Elizabeth Irene Roby Hevener Lilley. She was also the stepdaughter of the late Don Howard Lilley, whom she also considered a father.

Ada graduated in 1967 from Redwood High School in Marrin County, California.

Ada was a dedicated stay-at-home mother, raising two boys that were kindly nicknamed “Doo-Wray” and “Boot.” She also cared for several family members during their elder years including her Aunt Hazel, Aunt Alma, Aunt Edna, Grandma Roby, and her mother-in-law, Lorine Campbell.

A devoted wife, she was married to her husband, Pete, for over 57 years. While she never had daughters, she was very close to her daughters-in-law, Becky and Tonya and considered them her own.

Beyond her focus on her immediate family, she was a very dedicated daughter. She supported her mom, “Libby”, and “Don” for many years and until their passing. Ada carried so many memories of evenings spent at their house on Parkhill Road, and of the many camping trips and other fun travel and recreation her family experienced with them.

A dedicated Christian, she served in various roles inside and outside of the church for most of her life and was a long-time volunteer with Weekday Religious Education.

Ada loved her grandchildren very much and was actively involved with them while her health allowed. Known as “Granny,” she would be the one sitting in the kiddie pool, rolling in the grass, hitting the wiffle ball, and sticking her head in the street drainpipe to find the lost ball. Nothing meant more to her than time spent with her grandkids: Riley Ann Campbell, Deacon Crosby Campbell, Kera Wray Campbell, and Kellen Blaine Campbell; along with a great-niece, Morgan Sarah Armstong and great-nephew, Nathan Samuel Armstong, whom she considered her first grandchildren.

In addition to her grandchildren, she is survived by her husband, Harold "Pete" Wray Campbell; her sons, David Wray Campbell and his wife, Becky, and Christopher Todd Campbell and his wife, Tonya; her brothers, Virgil Lee “Chuck” Hevener, Douglas Burton Hevener and his wife, Dana, and Ronald Brent Hevener and his wife, Jennifer; and her sister, Patti Sue Mawyer and her husband, C.T. She is also survived by two special sisters-in-law, Sandy Lee Hevener and Brenda Reeves Hevener; two special nieces, Kimberly Perry Graves and Bonnie Balser Craig; her aunt, Dot Clayton; a longtime close friend, Rose Tolley; and numerous other relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brothers, Larry Clinton Hevener and Gary Wayne Hevener; her sister, Carolyn Kaye Hevener Perry; and four dogs she loved like her own children, Mandy, Casey Lynn, Cody Blue and Zoey Byrd.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton with the Reverend Russell Heinrich officiating.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to Annex Fellowship Church (1570 New Hope Road, Staunton, VA 24401) or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).
