Alexander Durrett Kirtley, 76, of Staunton, died on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Brightview Baldwin Park in Staunton.

Mr. Kirtley was born on November 13, 1946, the son of the late Frank Keyser and Elizabeth Thomas Dunlap Kirtley, Sr.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jane Kirtley Christiansen, and his significant other, Barbara Hunter Grant.

He was a graduate of Emory and Henry College and held Masters degrees from the University of Virginia and James Madison University. 

He taught in the Department for the Deaf at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, in the Roanoke City Public School System, and at Wilson Memorial High School in Augusta County. He was also employed by the State Department of Education in the Department of Special Education and served as an Adjunct Instructor at Blue Ridge Community College and a Visiting Instructor at the University of Virginia. He also served as a volunteer guide at Monticello.  In 2009 the Community Foundation of the Blue Ridge presented him with a Dawbarn Education Award.

Mr. Kirtley was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, Clerk of the Session, and Trustee.

He is survived by a brother Frank Keyser Kirtley, Jr. and his wife, Donna of  Staunton, and two nephews, Frank Marshall Kirtley and his wife, Amy of Staunton, and John Douglas Kirtley and his wife, Rebecca of Lisbon, New York.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton by the Reverend Dr. A. Taylor Todd of Birmingham, AL, and Reverend Mr. Jeff Bender, Interim Minister of First Presbyterian - Staunton.

Pallbearers will be Humes J. "Tripp" Franklin, Ill, Dr. Howard T Holden, Jr., Earnest R. Landes, Larry C. Landes, W. Stuart Moffett, Ill, Dr. Douglas W. Shifflett, and Gregory B. Troxell.

Serving as ushers will be Dylan T. Hudson, Trent D. Johnson, and R. David Lowman, Sr.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilson Memorial High School Scholarship Fund (189 Hornet Road, Fishersville, VA 22939).
