Allan Baker Painter, II (85), known by all as Al, passed away on February 2, 2026 after a short illness. Al and his twin brother, the late Simon M. Painter, Jr. (Cy) were born on May 8, 1940 in Bedford, Virginia, the sons of the late Simon M. Painter, Sr and the late Laura Lackey Painter.
Since moving to Staunton in 1955, and with the exception of years spent in college and as an artillery officer in the U.S. Army, Al has resided here.
Al attended Staunton Military Academy for three years, rising to the rank of Cadet Captain and Company Commander. He was an all around athlete, and was particularly active in track and field events such as the pole vault and, in College, the javelin throw.
Al attended Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, lettered in Varsity Track and was a Distinguished Military Graduate. During the summers, he was a lifeguard at the Ingleside pool. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army and served 13 months in South Korea.
Upon completion of his active duty military service, Al returned to Staunton where he continued to serve for a number of years in the Virginia National Guard. In civilian life he served the Staunton community as a real estate broker, a real estate appraiser, a teacher of real estate at Blue Ridge Community College, and for years after most men would have chosen to retire, as a bus driver for Augusta County Schools.
In his spare time, Al enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. He was a long time member of the Rockbridge Bath Hunt Club, the Gypsy Hill Golf Course, and the Staunton Elks Club.
In addition to his parents, Al was predeceased by his twin brother, Simon M. Painter, Jr., and his sister, Marcella P. Mears.
Al is survived by two sons, Allan B. Painter, III, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Matthew F. Painter of Staunton, and by a Grandson, Jeffrey S. Painter of Verona, Virginia. Al is also survived by a brother, Samuel F. Painter of Blythewood, South Carolina, a sister-in-law, Vickie J. Painter of Staunton, a special niece, Sue M. Hubbell of Castle Rock, Colorado, and by numerous other nephews and nieces.
Services will be announced at a later date.
