Benny Ray Whitesell, 79, of Staunton, passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.
He was born on April 23, 1947, in Staunton, a son of the late Arthur Newcomb, Whitesell Sr. and Flossie Virginia Nutty Whitesell.
Benny proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His commitment to his fellow veterans continued throughout his life through his membership in American Legion Post 13 and AMVETS Post 511 in Staunton.
A hardworking man throughout his life, Benny spent many years on the road as a truck driver. He worked for Fauber Freightways, Inc. for twenty-nine years and for Jones Motor Company for fourteen years.
Benny was a faithful member of Third Presbyterian Church in Staunton, where he served as an elder and bell ringer. In his free time, he had a special appreciation for old cars and enjoyed attending car shows.
Above all, Benny was devoted to his family, especially his beloved wife, Carrie. The two shared sixty years of marriage together.
In addition to his beloved wife, Carrie Ann Jarvis Whitesell, he is survived by his daughters, Sherry Lynn Whitesell and Tina Marie Whitesell Pack and her husband, Garry; his granddaughter, Elexis “Lexi” Crisp; his brother, Bobby Lee Whitesell and his wife, Pat; and his puppy, Mary.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur “Tom” Newcomb Whitesell, Jr. and Fred Alexander Whitesell.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Third Presbyterian Church in Staunton with the Reverend Patrick Pettit officiating.
Entombment in the Four Seasons Mausoleum at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton will follow.
It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to Third Presbyterian Church (1313 Barterbrook Road, Staunton, VA 24401) or to American Legion Post 13 (357 Cedar Green Road, Staunton, VA 24401).
