Betty Jean Neff Wade, 79, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at AVIVA Baldwin Park in Staunton.
She was born on July 19, 1946, in Bath County, to the late Charles Clifford Neff, Sr. and Della Agnes Loan Shoulder.
Betty's educational journey took her through Bath County High School before advancing to Dunsmore Business College in Staunton. Her spirit and dedication soon turned into a thriving career, as she partnered with her late husband, William, to establish the celebrated eatery Our Place in Buffalo Gap - a restaurant that became a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Through her work, Betty created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, where friendships were forged over shared meals and laughter. A gifted baker, Betty's delicious cakes and pies became her signature, earning her a reputation for culinary excellence that warmed the hearts of those fortunate enough to share in her treats.
Betty was also known throughout her life for her nurturing and selfless nature. She dedicated herself to taking care of others, ensuring that their needs were always met. Her generous spirit extended not only to family and friends but also to the many lives she touched through in-home visits and general caretaking. More than anything, she adored her grandchildren - they were truly her world. She also enjoyed vacations at Smith Mountain Lake, where cherished memories were made amidst the beauty of nature and the joy of togetherness.
Beyond her nurturing abilities and culinary skills, Betty was known for her infectious laughter and keen sense of humor, leading a joyful and authentic life that brightened the days of many. Betty’s vibrant personality and earnest spirit will be profoundly missed.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Julie "Nikki" Nicole Wade Sabiston and her husband, Tom, and Jill Shannon Wade Surratt; her grandchildren, Sarah Kathryn Surratt and her wife, Erin, and Hannah Wade Surratt, Jacob William, Jonathan David, and Joseph Wade Sabiston; and her beloved pets, Chloe the dog and Kiki the cat.
In addition to her parents and her beloved husband, William Hubert Wade, she is preceded in death by her brother, Charles "C.C." Clifford Neff, Jr., and a son-in-law, Doug Surratt.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with Pastor Warren Knott officiating.
Interment will follow at Windy Cove Cemetery in Millboro.
