Mom went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at her residence in Staunton.
She was born in Deerfield, on November 9, 1941, to the late John Hudson and Thelma Belle (Morris) Armstrong. She was the ninth of 12 children.
Mom graduated from Wilson Memorial High School. In 1959, she was elected to represent Wilson in the ‘Miss Teen Queen’ pageant. She also graduated from Elizabeth Brant School of Business after raising five children. She met the love of her life at age 14 and she and Dad were married 59 years. She was a lifelong member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, served as President of the Olivet Women, was a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of Olivet Circle 6.
She will be remembered for her wonderful sweet tea, round steak and gravy, homemade pies, German chocolate cake, and the hottest hamburger chili you have ever tasted! The vast majority of her life was devoted to her husband and children. She was always busy making sure we all got to where we needed to go. She was thrilled when Kim finally got her driver's license! Her grandchildren affectionately called her "Nanny." They still remember and smile about her taking them on wonderful trips to the beach and the Orioles games. And every season, everyone got to go shopping with Nanny for new shoes!
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nine siblings and her beloved husband, Harold Wilson Reid (Dad).
Surviving are her five children, Kim Weller (Scott), Karmen Harvill (Chip), Kodi Frye (Rex), Kasey Reid (Mike), and Wil Reid (Layla), and her ten grandchildren: Beth Bonner (Keary), John Reid Weller (Maegan), Alex Weller (Kathryn), Rob Harvill, Sid Harvill, Lexi Have, Wilson Reid (Addison, fiance), Jack Reid, Ella Reid, and Glady Belle Reid. She is also survived by her ten great-grandchildren, Carson Bonner, Jane Bonner, Anna Bonner, Patrick Weller, Elsie Weller, Alice Weller, Henry Weller, Warren Harvill, Lincoln Harvill, and Hudson Harvill; her brother, Curtis Armstrong; and her sister, Joyce Van Lear.
The family would like to especially thank her caregivers, Rachel, Brandy, and Dania and Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah. We will be forever grateful.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Olivet Presbyterian Church in Staunton with Pastor Lee Thomas officiating.
Interment will be private at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton and at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Olivet Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund (1019 Richmond Road, Staunton, VA. 24401).
