Colbert "Cobbie" B. Ferguson

Colbert "Cobbie" Lorraine Kelly Bell Ferguson, 83, departed this life on Friday, June 26, 2026, at The Legacy at North Augusta in Staunton.

Cobbie was born in Staunton on August 17, 1942. She was the daughter of Catherine H. Morton and Alonzo N. Morton.

Cobbie moved to Linden, NJ in 1949 where she graduated from Linden High School in 1960 and went to work for Bell Atlantic. While in New Jersey, Cobbie met and married Russell Ferguson who predeceased her on September 5, 2021, after over fifty years of marriage.

In 1967, Cobbie and Russell moved back to Staunton where they raised two sons, Robert and Steven, while working for Planters Bank as a teller for over thirty years. Cobbie was a long-time devoted member of Allen Chapel AME Church in Staunton and held several positions in support of the church, including as a steward and treasurer.

Cobbie was a wife, mother, sister, and aunt who spoke softly but whose love and devotion to her family, friends, and church were heard loudly by those who knew and loved her.

Cobbie, one of four siblings, predeceased by her older brother, C. Nathaniel Bell and a younger sister Phyllis, a.k.a Sakina Aziz.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her sons, Robert Ferguson (Yvette), and Steven Ferguson (Kelly); her grandson, Nathaniel Scott; her sister Jacqueline Wilson (Joe); and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Allen Chapel AME, with Dr. Edward A. Scott officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral, beginning at 9:00 AM.

Interment will immediately follow at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.
