Dennis William Stephenson, 89, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on July 10, 1936, in Augusta County to the late John William and Callie Mae Fix Stephenson.
Dennis proudly served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960, stationed in Turkey.
He worked for many years for Valley Oil as a maintenance technician, self-employed auto detailer, and a machinist by trade. Known for his steady hands and strong work ethic, he could be counted on to repair, restore, and maintain just about anything mechanical.
A life member of the Craigsville VFW, the Staunton Eagles, and the Waynesboro Moose Lodge, he valued the friendships he found in each of these organizations. He also had a lifelong passion for classic cars - collecting, restoring, and even selling them over the years.
Beyond his work and hobbies, he enjoyed attending auctions and flea markets, always in search of treasures. He had a love for cars, a fondness for women, and a loyal devotion to his dogs, Luna and Biscuit, who were his constant companions.
He is survived by his son, Terry Stephenson and his wife, Donna; his grandchildren, Matthew Stephenson, Sr. and his wife, Hannah, Travis Wade, Tristan Sprouse, Sr. and his wife Melody, and Ashley Sprouse and her fiancé, Brandon; his great-grandchildren, Matthew Stephenson, Jr., Tristan Sprouse, Jr., Brianna Sprouse, and Marleigh Miller; a special niece, Vickie Moran, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ann Smith Stephenson; his brothers, Wade Norris Stephenson, John Franklin Stephenson, Donnie Hankins Stephenson, John William Stephenson, and Fred Anderson Stephenson; his sisters, Bernice Fontaine Stone and Nola Mae Moran; and his daughter, Tina Kay Stephenson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton with Reverend Russell Heinrich officiating.
Active pallbearers will be Matthew Stephenson, Sr., Tristan Sprouse, Sr., Travis Wade, Matt Cavanagh, David Houff, Brad Rexrode, Danny Sheets, and Kevin Benson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Augusta County SPCA (P.O. Box 2014, Staunton, VA 24402.)
