Edgar "Ed" Jones III, 84, a well-known figure in the Staunton community and a beloved music craftsman, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, in that city.

He was born on October 9, 1941, in Florida, to the late Edgar and Marion Hendry Jones II and from an early age, he dedicated his life to his craft as the owner and operator of Ed Jones Piano Service, a cornerstone of the Staunton music scene since the 1960s.

Throughout his career, Edgar's passion for pianos was evident in every piano he repaired, tuned, and built. His expertise extended to serving private individuals, churches, and public institutions, reflecting his unwavering commitment to bringing the joy of music into people's lives. Edgar was also a long-standing member of the Piano Technicians Guild, further showcasing his dedication to the art of piano craftsmanship.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Edgar was deeply involved in his community. He was a devoted member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Staunton and for over fifty-five years, he proudly held membership with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Staunton Lodge No. 351, where he has also served as an officer. Edgar also formed lasting friendships through his friendship with Bill W. for forty-two years, finding camaraderie and family among those he met along the way with both groups. His enthusiasm for music extended beyond pianos; he possessed a unique talent for playing the calliope, captivating audiences during Staunton's Fourth of July parade in his earlier years.

He is survived by the children of his special friend, Anne Surratt, Stefanie Joy Nutty Jones, and her brother, Mykel Andrew Nutty. Edgar, who had a love for animals, is also survived by his cat companions, Sneaky, Millie, Molly, and Flash.

Like his father before him, Edgar recognized the profound value of contributing to the advancement of science by donating his body for study, seeing in it one final way to help others learn and heal.

Edgar’s legacy is enriched by his profound impact on those who crossed his path, and he is mourned by many who had the pleasure of knowing him.

At his request, there will be no formal services.
