STAUNTON - Elwood B. Byrd, 76, husband of Virginia Gail Byrd, passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021 at UVA Medical Center.
He was born on October 13, 1944 in Staunton to the late Wallace McClung Byrd and Aline (Painter) Byrd.
Mr. Byrd retired from the telephone company. He also drove a school bus for Augusta County Schools as well as a bus for Quick’s Bus Company. He was a longtime member of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church and a member of the Pioneer Club (of the telephone company). He loved camping and most of all loved spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his son, Darrell Byrd (Carla); his daughter Denise Merica (Jesse); his sisters, Elizabeth Palmer (Lyle), Doris Huffman, Faye Hall (Kenneth) and Irene Booze; his grandchildren, Andrew May, & Ashley Byrd, and John and Payton Merica; and his special canine companion, Scarlett.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Marika Byrd.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 1, 2021 from 6:00 P.M – 8:00 P.M. at Henry Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Andrew May, John Merica, Jesse Painter, Matt Booze, Billy Kessler, and George Patterson.
