Evelyn Mae McIntyre Sica, 92, of Staunton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah House in Fishersville.
She was born on August 7, 1934, in Sharon, Connecticut, a daughter of the late Ernest McIntyre and Marion Mildred Stoddard Hine.
Evelyn had a deep love for nature and all of its creatures. She took great joy in feeding the wildlife that visited her home, including birds, squirrels, opossums, skunks, raccoons, deer, and just about anything else that wandered her way. Her kindness toward animals was so great that we figure even Saint Francis himself would have been proud.
Of all the animals she loved, none held a more special place in her heart than her beloved cat, Pumpkin. Affectionately considered her favorite “child,” Pumpkin was a cherished companion and brought Evelyn much love and happiness.
She also had a tremendous love for flowers and trees. Evelyn enjoyed tending to them and took great pride in everything she grew. Whether caring for a favorite flower or watching a tree flourish through the years, she found great happiness in their uniqueness and beauty.
Evelyn will also be remembered for her quick and sassy wit. She had a way of keeping those around her on their toes and was never afraid to share exactly what was on her mind.
She and her husband, Richard, were devoted, longtime members of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Staunton and were very involved and generous with their time.
She is survived by her daughter, Santina “Tina” Marie Sica Ricci and her husband, Richard; her grandsons, Jason and Jeremy Wood and Michael Ricci; her granddaughter, Lea Ricci; her brother, Francis “Butch” Hine and his wife, Trish, and their children, Thomas and Melissa Hine; and her special extended “family”, Jean Slaughter and her children, Ben and Sarah; and special neighbor, Krissie Small.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard Louis Sica; their daughter, Pamela Jo Sica; her stepfather, Leslie Hine; and her beloved in-laws, Chester and Anna Sica.
A funeral mass will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Staunton with the Reverend Sam Hill officiating. A rosary service will take place prior to the mass.
Interment at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton will follow.
It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Virginia Alzheimer's Disease Center (5620 Cox Rd Glen Allen, VA 23060) or to the Staunton Augusta Church Relief Association (205 North Augusta Street, Staunton, VA 24401).
After the interment, family and friends are invited to the Sica Residence for a reception and time of remembrance, sharing memories, and no shortage of smiles and laughter.
