Fred Berkley Cox, 88, went to be with our Lord, Friday, November 28, 2025.
He was born on November 11, 1937, to the late Hallah Winfree and Alma Katherine Quick Cox.
Fred was a lifelong resident of Augusta County. He was born on Springhill Road just outside of Staunton and lived much of his life in this area. In 1988, he moved to Mt. Sidney and called the community his home until his passing.
He was a life-long active member of Pleasant View Evangelical Lutheran Church in Staunton and attended services regularly, until he was no longer able.
He graduated from Wilson Memorial High School, class of 1955, and enjoyed attending class reunions and staying in contact with his classmates. He was also a US Navy Reserve Veteran.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and especially the friendship and camaraderie of the Horseshoe Hunt Club in Highland County, Virginia. He was also an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America throughout the 1970’s.
Fred was employed as a machinist at DuPont in Waynesboro for thirty-five years. He formed many life-long friendships during his time there. After his retirement in 1991, he continued for several years as an on-site trainer at DuPont to the next generation of machinists through Valley Vocational Technical Center.
He grew up on the family farm and resumed farming after his retirement. He particularly had a love of Percheron horses and was actively involved in the Virginia Percheron Association. Mr. Cox owned a horse-drawn carriage service and provided many special wedding day experiences for couples in the Valley. He enjoyed trips throughout the country to procure and sell horse-drawn antique farm equipment. He had a love of the past and all things antique.
Fred was the quintessential do-it-yourselfer. He was a man of many talents including carpentry, woodworking, machining, and auto mechanics. Being in his workshop was his favorite past-time where he creatively built new furniture pieces and cabinetry, refinished antiques, and recreated horse-drawn farming equipment of the past.
He is survived by his son, John Cox and his wife, Paula of Hereford, Arizona; his two daughters, Robyn Dean and her husband, Brad of Penn Laird and Amy Moyers and her husband, Dale (his devoted caregiver), of Waynesboro; his six grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Laurel and Zane Simmons, Berkley and Weston Dean, and Sydney and Dylan Moyers; and his special great-nephew Samuel (S.J.) Borden of Mt. Sidney.
Mr. Cox was a very devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a man you could depend on no matter the need. He was the last surviving child of the Hallah and Alma Cox family.
He is preceded in death by seven siblings; and his first wife and the mother of his children, Patricia Berry.
The family would like to express our heartfelt and sincere thanks to Dale Moyers for being such a wonderful caregiver for the past few years.
Memorial contributions may be made in Fred’s memory to Pleasant View Lutheran Church (2733 Springhill Road, Staunton, VA 24401).
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Monday, December 8, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
A funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Pleasant View Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2733 Springhill Road in Staunton with Pastor David Bacon officiating.
