Gene Nelson Cash, Sr., 85, entered God’s victory Lane on Saturday, June 20, 2026. He completed eighty-five and a half laps around the sun and is now in the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ.
Gene was born on December 29, 1940, in Augusta County, to the late Samuel Harrison and Mary Lou Fix Cash, the ninth of ten children. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Gene was a devoted and faithful member of Fishersville Baptist Church and Community Center, where he worshiped and served since 1947. At the age of nine, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, beginning a lifelong walk of faith that sustained him through many of life's trials and blessings. A dedicated servant of the church, Gene taught Sunday School for forty years and faithfully served as a deacon and on numerous committees throughout the years.
Gene graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1959. Following graduation, he began working at Reid's Grocery Store before beginning a thirty-seven-year career at the DuPont Plant, where he retired after years of dedicated service. A generous and kind-hearted man, Gene was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He faithfully served his community by delivering Meals on Wheels and was an active member of the Fishersville Ruritan Club for twenty-five years. He was also a member of the Moose, Elks, and Eagles.
Above all, Gene loved the Lord and cherished his family. He especially treasured his role as “Pawpaw,” a title that brought him immeasurable joy. He enjoyed dancing and had a lifelong passion for all things Ford, Bill Elliott, and NASCAR. Gene had a special fondness for the 1956 Ford Thunderbird and was proud to own one.
He is survived by his beloved granddaughters, Jeannette Lynn Sprouse and her husband, Paul and Jessica Nicole Cash. His great-grandchildren, Aston, Avery, and Alexia Sprouse and Kinsley, Kloe, and Keelen Furry; his sisters-in-law, Sandra and Georgie Catherine Cash; his special niece, Lisa Hodge; and a special nephew, Wesley Cash.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years and the mother of his children, Frances “Pankie” Courtney Cash; his two sons, Gene Cash, Jr. and Kirk Douglas; his sister, Mamie C. Hodge; and eight brothers, Morrison, Buzz, John, Fauntleroy, Bruce, Greene, Herbert, and Warren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Fishersville Community Church with Pastors Chis Smith and Gene’s nephew, Dustin Gilmer.
Interment will immediately follow at Augusta Memorial in Waynesboro.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Gene's nephews.
The family would like to thank the Waynesboro Manor staff for providing such wonderful care and support to Gene in his time need.
Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels (P.O. Box 791568, Baltimore, MD 21279) or the charity of your choice.
Gene’s motto and words that he lived by were “I always tried to treat people the way I would want to be treated”.
