George Edward Bird, 85, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah in Fishersville.
He was born on November 20, 1940, in Alleghany County to the late Arthur Aranuah Percy and Lynda Ruth Greenway Bird.
George was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and deeply loved his country. During his military service, he served aboard the USS Independence, an aircraft carrier, where he worked as a refueler.
Following his military service, George began a long career with Smith’s Transfer in Verona, working in the maintenance department for more than thirty years. After his retirement, he continued working at the Staunton Correctional Center, where he began as a corrections officer and later became head of the maintenance department.
In his free time, George loved golfing and could often be found “hitting the links” with his buddies. He also took great pride in caring for his lawn and enjoyed spending time outside mowing and keeping everything well maintained.
Above all, George was immensely proud of his family. Of all he accomplished throughout his life, he considered his family his greatest accomplishment and took tremendous pride in each of them.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Trent Sawyer Bird; his son, Scott Greenway Bird and his fiancée, Wanda Maddox; his daughter, Amy Ruth Bird Hammond and her husband, Daryl; his grandchildren, Dwyer Bird and his wife, Caitlyn, Megan Bird, Walter Pultz, and Blakesee Pultz; his great-granddaughters, Charlotte Bird and Afton Rohan; his nephews, Kenny, Ben, and Bo (Anita) Bird; and his great-nephew and nieces, Tristan, Julia, and Logan.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, William Arthur Bird; and his niece Krista Bird.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with Reverends Jedd Trenum and Charlie Renolds officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 12:00 PM.
Interment will immediately follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton.
