Glenda Kay DeWitt, 80, of Weyers Cave, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
Born May 6, 1944, in Rockingham County, she was the cherished daughter of the late Glyndon and Kathleen Taylor Simmers.
Glenda had a deep love for the simple pleasures in life - whether it was getting lost in the pages of a good book, enjoying a classic film, or reminiscing about her favorite television shows. Her favorite movie was E.T., and her favorite classic TV shows were Gunsmoke and Bonanza.
She was a woman of deep compassion and joy, finding solace in the companionship of her beloved dog, Sami, who was always by her side. Glenda loved to watch the hummingbirds, deer, and possums that frequented her yard, a reminder of nature’s small wonders that brought her so much joy and peace. She also cared for several feral cats, feeding them daily. One of her greatest joys was her love for her daughter’s horses, Missy and Thor. Not only did she help care for them with a tenderness and concern that reflected her deep affection for these beautiful creatures, but she also observed them with a sense of childlike wonder. Whether watching them gallop across the field or marveling at their gentle nature, Glenda’s eyes would light up with excitement when talking about them, as if she were seeing the world through a fresh, unjaded lens. The horses held a special place in her heart, and she took great delight in their company, sharing her enthusiasm with anyone who would listen.
Her green thumb was legendary, with her garden thriving under her loving care. She took great pride in nurturing life in all its forms.
Glenda was also an active and proud member of the Eagles Club and the Moose Lodge, where she touched many lives with her gentle spirit and infectious warmth.
But perhaps the most profound legacy Glenda leaves behind is the love she gave so freely - especially to her grandchildren, who held a special place in her heart. Her kindness, light, and unwavering love will live on in them and in the countless hearts she touched. Her children find comfort in knowing that their mother has finally been reunited with her own mother, as well as her son, both of whom she has missed so much. She is now cradled in their loving arms.
Glenda is survived by her devoted daughters, Shannon L DeWitt-Kuehle and her husband, Chad, and Donna K. DeWitt Divers; her son, Denver D. DeWitt and his partner, Melody Collins; her brother, Dennis W. Simmers and his wife, Eva; her sister, LaVonne S. Cauthen and her husband, Sid; her grandchildren, Chloe Divers, Zachary DeWitt (Ashley Ramsey), LeAnn Wimer (Emily King), Samantha Gray and Lili Warren; her nieces, Jacqui Sargent, Karen Bishop, Shenandoah Simmers, Alicia Midkiff and Denise Welcher; her aunt, Thoris Krafft; her cousin, Stephanie Wallace; and her special friends, Faye Hayes, Donna Harris, and Kitty Lindsay, whose friendships meant the world to her.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathleen Taylor Simmers; her ex-husband, Lewis “Lew” Calvin DeWitt, Jr.; her son, Brian Z. DeWitt; her brothers, Carl “Butch” Simmers and Kenneth Simmers; her nephew, Kevin Goode; and her nieces, Kathy Breeden and Carol Cauthen.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
