Harriet F. Andrews

Harriet F. Andrews of Staunton, Virginia, 91, widow of Robert L. Andrews, transitioned from her earthly body on December 9, 2023 in Waynesboro, Virginia with her children by her side.

Harriet was born September 23, 1932 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the daughter of Samuel H. “Red” Forsythe and “Lucy” B. Forsythe.

As a daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, spouse, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and co-worker, Harriet was a quiet and kind influence in the lives of those she loved and knew. However, Harriet also had a feisty side and was unafraid to advocate for herself if ever needed.

Harriet met and then married the love of her life, Robert (“Bob”, “Boz”) Andrews in 1955. He was her friend and the man who made her smile unconditionally and love with endless warmth. Harriet and Boz raised four children together from North Carolina, to Roanoke and then to Staunton.

Harriet and Boz experienced times of want and plenty, in sickness and in health, and with challenges and triumphs. Her heart was broken when Robert left her side and let go of her hand for the final time in December of 2016.

Harriet worked throughout her life to support her lifestyle with Robert and their children. She held positions at Hogshead Drug, T-Mart Drug, Leggett, and eventually retiring from Staunton Fabric.

Harriet will be remembered for her ability to nurture stunning orchids. She had a true gift and a sunny, enclosed porch. Harriet and Bob never had to purchase a pet. Their children were more than happy to bring cats or dogs into their home. Mr. Kitty and Honda were just two of the many who graced their lives and home - being saved from the shelter and streets. Harriet always welcomed her children’s friends into her home for homemade meals, lively conversations, and sleep-overs. The Andrews family enjoyed summer beach trips and special outings to the Ringling Brothers Circus, Ice Capades, and the Harlem Globe Trotters to name a few adventures. Harriet loved gardening, puttering in the yard (she could spot a weed from yards away), growing plants indoors and outside, watching the birds, eating ice cream and chicken and dumplings. Harriet was a voracious reader of historical fiction and human relationship stories.

Harriet was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Betty F. Williams and John M. Forsythe.

Harriet is survived by her son, Steve Andrews and his partner, Patricia Freeman of Phoenix/ Staunton; son, Phillip Andrews (Ann-Marie) of Fredericksburg; daughter, Daphne Stickley (Jeff) of Lexington; daughter, Janet Melton (Mark) of Staunton; and former daughter-in-law, Jocelyn Andrews. Harriet’s grandchildren are: Stephen (Yuri), Justin (Paige), Audra Lockard, Sarah Ludwick (Kevin). Her great-grandchildren are: Eliana, Luna, Ma’Eve, Eli, Jax, Benjamin, and Eleanor Rose. Harriet is also survived by dear cousins, nieces, nephews, family friends, and supporters.

The family wishes to express gratitude for the loving and kind support of Hollis and Wendy Dodge, Alison Denbigh, Walter Lewis, Alonzo Taylor, Marcia Walker, Alice Schehl, and Nira Campbell. In addition, past and present caregivers and physicians, members of River Edge Rehabilitation and Nursing, and Legacy Hospice provided warmth and guidance to Harriet and her family.

According to Harriet’s wishes, her body will be cremated.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Thornrose Cemetery.

Please celebrate Harriet’s life and smile by doing the things you enjoy to recognize and honor her memory: Plant a tree, plant, or bulb; eat some ice cream or chicken and dumplings; donate to your favorite charity or animal shelter; and read, read, read. Knowledge is sacred. Love One Another.
