Howard L. Dunsmore

Howard Leroy Dunsmore of Augusta County, VA, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on December 17, 2023, three days after his 93rd birthday.

Howard was born to Leroy Gilbert and Fannie Shumate Dunsmore on December 14, 1930, in Verona, VA.  After graduating from Mt. Sidney High School in 1948, he married his sweetheart, Nancy Fultz prior to leaving for active duty in the Korean War.  Upon his return, he went to work for Holsinger Lumber Company.  Howard and Nancy were blessed with 72 years of marriage and two girls, Suzanne and Barbara.

Howard was a master woodworker, building two of the family’s homes and most of the wood furniture.  He loved to hunt and fish and play with his grandsons and great grandson.  He was known for his gentle, caring and selfless nature with never a harsh word for anybody or anything.  He was beloved by all who knew him.

He and Nancy were still often seen holding hands.  Nancy was always there for him and her care over the years gave him a long and comfortable life.

Howard is survived by his wife, Nancy, daughters and son in laws, Suzi and Mickey Berry and Barbara and Steve Spradling, grandson and his wife, Thomas and Laura Spradling and his most favorite, great grandson Owen Spradling.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends who loved him dearly.  Howard was preceded in death by his grandson, Tyler Spradling, and his siblings, Judy Alexander (Paul), Evelyn VanPelt (Stuart), Stanley Dunsmore (infant), Jake Dunsmore (Jean) and Danny Dunsmore.

Howard will be buried at Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mt. Sidney near his grandson.  A private memorial service is being planned for the Spring.
