Jackie Wayne Johnson, 69, of Waynesboro, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Staunton.

He was born on March 11, 1957, in Charlottesville, to the late David Lee, Sr. and Florence Grace Moss Johnson.

Jackie will be remembered for his long-time dedication to the University of Virginia and for the warmth, joy, and friendship he shared with everyone around him.

He began his career at UVA in July 1977 and devoted an extraordinary forty-nine years to serving the university community. During nearly five decades of service, he worked in a variety of assignments across Grounds and the UVA Medical Center. His career began with Hospital Security in the West Complex, which was then UVA’s main hospital. Generations of students, patients, faculty, staff, and colleagues came to know Jackie as a familiar face and a steady, dependable presence. He truly loved UVA and was proud of the many years he spent serving the institution and its people.

Away from work, Jackie enjoyed dancing, spending time outdoors, and being surrounded by family and friends. He never met a stranger and genuinely loved people. He treasured trips to Disney World, and Tigger was his favorite Disney character. Jackie also enjoyed riding his scooter, giving plenty of love to the family cat, Patches, and working on his vehicles. His love of automobiles was infectious, inspiring his son to appreciate cars and learn to work on vehicles alongside him.

More recently, Jackie became a Philadelphia Eagles fan through conversations with his son. Whether he was working on a vehicle, cheering on the Eagles, enjoying time with his family, or simply sharing a laugh with someone, Jackie brought happiness and enthusiasm to every moment.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tommie Sue Johnson Woodward; his son, Gregory Alan Johnson and his girlfriend, Haley Riggins; his daughter, Erica Nicole Johnson; his brother, Isaiah Johnson and his wife, Donna; his sisters-in-law, Clara Mae and Donna Johnson; many nieces and nephews; cousins; and many dear friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Albert Lee, David Lee, Jr., Robert Lee, Samuel Henry, John Edgar, Willie Mack, and James Johnson.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Friday, August 28, 2026, also at Henry Funeral Home.
