James Franklin Allen, Sr., 91, passed on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at his residence in Staunton.
James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose legacy of hard work, ingenuity, and love for family will never be forgotten.
Born on December 6, 1933, in Augusta County, he was a son of the late Jasper Jennings, Sr. and Eva Lena Moyers Allen.
James lived a life marked by purpose, perseverance, and a passion for building and creating. He proudly served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War, answering the call of duty with honor.
James was known as the founder and owner of Allen Engine Service in Staunton, a small business he operated alongside his son, Jay. Together, they built a reputation for quality, trust, and commitment that resonated throughout the community. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his craft were matched only by his adventurous soul - James was an experienced pilot with eleven years of flying under his belt, and a skilled craftsman who even built his own boat.
He found joy and peace outdoors, especially at his cherished cabin on the Shenandoah River, where he spent countless hours surrounded by nature and family. His hands were always busy, his mind always curious, and his heart always open.
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his brother, Jasper Jennings, Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Allen; his son, James Allen, Jr. and his wife, Yvette; Penny Cobb and her husband, Douglas; Kathy Coceano; and many grandchildren whom he loved.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Briery Branch Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Dayton with Reverend Harry Moore officiating.
The family would like to especially thank James’ doctors, Michael Cavender and Theodore Cisul; their staff; and his granddaughters, Sara and Cloey, for all their loving care. They would also like to thank Lauren, Stephanie, Anna, Kristy and Pastor Patrick of First Choice Hospice and Peggy and Chinee of Home Care. They want to extend a big heartfelt thank you to their dearest family and friends for their concerns, visits, cards, prayers, flowers, phone calls, and food. May God richly bless each and every one of them.
