James William Breckenridge, 77, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2025, at the King's Daughters Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton.
He was born on July 12, 1948, in Staunton, to the late Sunberry Pennybaker and Mary Louise Adams Breckenridge.
James had a long career as a cook at both Western State Hospital and the Holsum Bakery.
Beyond his career, James was an active member of his church, serving as a deacon and embodying the values of service and community. He was a man who found great happiness in the outdoors, particularly through his love of hunting and fishing. James was affectionately known as "Grandaddy," a testament to the warmth and affection he shared with everyone, especially the younger generations. Those who knew James often spoke of his imposing stature that exuded a protective and safe presence. His commitment to his loved ones, along with his generous spirit, will be fondly remembered by many.
James is survived by his devoted wife, JoAnn Breckenridge Mancimi; his sister, Brenda Breckenridge Johnson; his half-sister, Nina Marie Breckenridge; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind special family members Larry and Kim Mancimi, and LaTongia and Antoine Breckenridge.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Loretta Constance Theresa Breckenridge, Kenneth Allen Breckenridge, and Franklin Ulysses Breckenridge.
All services will be private.
