James “Cy” Cyrus Houff, 78, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at his residence in Head Waters.
He was born on November 25, 1947, in Staunton, a son of Joyce Edna Bement Houff and the late William Cyrus Houff.
Cy was an avid hunter and a true “mountain man” who felt most at home in the outdoors. Known for his wonderful sense of humor, he was always making others laugh and usually had another practical joke in the works. Cy was an honest and straightforward man who said what he meant and meant what he said.
A true patriot, James was immensely proud of his six years of service in the United States Marine Corps. He also had a lifelong love for Ford pickup trucks. Above all, his grandchildren were the light of his life, and the time he spent with them brought him his greatest joy.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his significant other of over twenty-five years, Karyn Louise Doan; his grandchildren, Katelyn Louise Fischel and her husband, Joe, Lily Grace Houff and her husband, Virgil, Wyatt James Houff, and Steve Colton Houff; his daughter-in-law, Shelia Arlene Houff; his brother-in-law, Howard Russell and his wife, Karen.
In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his son, S. Michael Houff, and his first wife, Brenda Russell Houff.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with the Reverend Howard Pendley officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at Pleasant View Lutheran Church Cemetery in Staunton.
Serving as pallbearers will be Wyatt James Houff, Steve Colton Houff, Lily Grace Houff, Katelyn Louise Fischel, Wayne Painter, Joseph Coffey, Virgil Dedrick, and Scott Neil.
The family respectfully requests no flowers. Your thoughts, prayers, and cherished memories are deeply appreciated.
