Joan K. Murphy

Joan Kivlighan Murphy, 92, of 301 N. Coalter Street, Staunton, died on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia.

She was born April 27, 1931, in Augusta County, and raised by her mother Pauline “Polly” Cason and Felix B. “Bus” Kivlighan. She was educated in Waynesboro and Staunton Public Schools and Nazareth College in Louisville, Kentucky.

She was a longtime member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where she took great care and pride in flower arrangement for the church and in the Adoration Chapel, especially at the holidays. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters for many years.

She is survived by her three sons: Charles D. (Chuck) Hutton, Jr. and wife, Angela of Conway, SC and grandson, Chad of Myrtle Beach, SC; William K. (Bill) and wife, Anne and grandsons, William K. (Kiv) Jr., Jackson, and Samuel of Fairfax, VA; Michael and wife, Michelle and grandchildren, Alexander and Katherine of Purcellville, VA.

A rosary service will be held at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton, where family will receive friends and visitors.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Waynesboro by Father Matthias Lusembo. Burial will be private at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.

The family is grateful to the staff of Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their caring and compassionate care of Joan and her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joan's honor to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (118 N. New Street, Staunton, VA 24401).
