John Kirk Anderson, 97, of Middlebrook, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, surrounded by his family.

John was born on March 15, 1928, in San Mateo, CA, to the late Hubert “Jo-Jo” Haven, Sr. and Marian Covert Wirtner Anderson.

He spent his early years in the San Francisco Bay Area before graduating from Western High School in Washington, D.C., and went on to attend the University of Virginia, where he earned his B.A. in Economics in 1955. It was there that he met his future wife, MaryAnn Law of Middlebrook, who was studying at the UVA School of Nursing. During his time at UVA, he was a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Following his education, he served eight years in the United States Navy, including active duty during the occupation of Europe after World War II and later reactivation with the U.S. Naval Reserve during the Korean conflict.

John and MaryAnn were married in 1955 and together raised four children, who survive him. He enjoyed a long career with Moore Business Forms, retiring in 1995 after decades of dedicated service. His work often involved U.S. Government contracts, and he took pride in overseeing Moore’s successful completion of the 1990 U.S. Census forms - the largest single government printing contract of its time.

Second only to his love for family was his passion for golf, a game he played well into his 95th year. Over the course of his life, he had the joy of playing many of the premiere courses across the United States and Europe. He carded eight holes-in-one, shot his age on multiple occasions, and formed lifelong friendships with his golfing companions. Beyond the course, he also had a gift for decorative trim carpentry, which he used to enhance the many homes his family lived in through the years.

John’s interests extended to music, particularly bluegrass. A devoted banjo player, he enjoyed sharing music as much as listening to it. Known for his sharp wit, he could always be counted on for a wry remark or a perfectly timed one-line joke that brought laughter to those around him.

For many years, John was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian Church (USA) in Middlebrook, where he supported the life of the congregation in countless ways. He was especially known for enthusiastically driving up bids at the church’s annual cake auction, often ensuring that one of MaryAnn’s desserts came home with him. His fondness for ice cream was legendary and well known among family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, MaryAnn Law Anderson of Middlebrook; his daughter, Lesley Anderson Sipple and his son-in-law, Keith Sipple of Doylestown, PA; his son, Wade Stephen Anderson and his daughter-in-law, Jenifer Motos Anderson of Birmingham, AL; his daughter, Drury Anderson Whitaker and his son-in-law, Thomas Whitaker of Fairfield, VA; his daughter, Carrie Anderson Eisenberg and his son-in-law, Jay Eisenberg of Earlysville, VA; his nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Hubert Haven Anderson Jr.; and his sisters, Jeanne Anderson Slavin and Drury Anderson O’Neil.

John’s family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Blue Ridge Christian Ministries’ Beulah Land campus, in Raphine, for all of the kind care and attention while he was a resident of that facility during the last year of his life.

John was cremated, and private services were held.
