John Stevens Mason, 79, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and proud veteran of the United States Navy, passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at his residence.

Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Stevens Thompson and Margaret Perry Mason

John devoted much of his life to education, service, and the pursuit of excellence. His distinguished academic journey began at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and American History in 1968. He continued his education at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, earning a Master of Science degree in Planning in 1979. From 1982 to 1984, he pursued further studies through the Armed Forces Institute and George Washington University, earning a MBA.

John's commitment to professional development extended throughout his military career. John proudly and honorably served his country for 22 years in the United States Navy, from 1968 until his retirement in 1990, achieving the rank of Commander (O-5). He completed numerous specialized training programs, including Officer Candidate School, Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, Jump School, Language School, and Surface Warfare Officer School.

Following his retirement from the Navy, he continued to lead a purposeful and productive life, enjoying woodworking and photography. His appreciation for craftsmanship, creativity, and service to others was also reflected in his active involvement with Habitat for Humanity

He is survived by his loving wife, Tamera Shomo Mason; his children, Elizabeth Beckh Harding, H. Wray Sherman IV and his wife, Ashley, and Charles Hunter Shomo II, and his wife, Dana; his six grandchildren, Madison and Jase Harding, Kellen and Bryce Sherman, and Ridge and Leddy Shomo; and his sister, Patricia Mason Eller and her husband, Dennis; brother in law and sister in law, Scott and Sally Shomo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Service Dogs of Virginia (PO Box 408, Charlottesville, VA 22902).
