John James Stover, Sr., passed away at his residence in Staunton on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

He was born on April 16, 1956, in Staunton to the late Fred Nelson, Sr. and Elizabeth Keefer Barkley Stover.

John served his country proudly as a corporal in the United States Army. He was a hardworking and skilled roofer who took great pride in his work at Western State Hospital in Staunton. John's commitment to his job was truly admirable and he made a lasting impact on those he worked with.

Outside of his career, John had a wide range of interests and hobbies. He attended Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church. Additionally, John had a love for the great outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever he had the opportunity. He was known for his generosity and willingness to help others. Above all else, John cherished spending time with his beloved grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" Ann Stover and Brandie Lynn Stover Roberts and her husband, Chuck; his son, John James Stover, Jr. and his wife, Beth V.; his sister, Laura "Ginger" Virginia Stover Johnson and her husband, Charlie; his brother, Joe Leland Stover and his wife, Jean; and his grandchildren, Declan Stover, Willow Stover, Marley Fulton, and Scottie Roberts. John is also survived by his “bonus family”, Sherri, Thomas, Michael, and Samuel Langford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Fred Nelson, Jr. and Raymond Henry Stover. 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 13, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. The funeral service will be held the following day, Monday, August 14, 2023, at 2:00 PM, also at Henry Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

Serving as pallbearers will be Doug Huffman, Brian Rousseau, Thomas Langford, Wade Stewart, Adam Johnson, and Glenn Morgan. John's grandchildren and the Langfords will serve as honorary pallbearers.

It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Heart Association (PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692).

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the hospice nurses at Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah and to the cardiology staff at Augusta Health.  

John J. Stover will be remembered and missed greatly by all who knew him. His dedication, kindness, and love for his family and friends leave a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.
