It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Laura Elizabeth “Libbey” Buckley on September 7, 2025, following a brave battle with cancer. The beloved daughter of Carie and Debbie Buckley, Libbey was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. She grew up in Staunton, Virginia enjoying a very happy childhood.
After suffering a traumatic brain injury at age 17, Libbey overcame her challenges with determination and the support of her family and community. She graduated from Stuart Hall School and then Roanoke College. She received her master’s degree from VCU and worked in the field of social work for several years. For the last fifteen years, she has worked at Shelburne Middle School, spending much of her time with students with special needs. There she had a close “work family” who have loved her and supported her throughout her illness. On Sundays, she kept the nursery at Linden Heights Baptist Church. The congregation and staff nurtured and loved Libbey during her time there.
Despite the many challenges in her life, Libbey faced each one with perseverance and grace. We will miss her so much and will always be guided by her enduring spirit. She led the way forward for us and was truly a child of light.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Josh Lallo, her sister and brother-in-law, Brooke and Rick Cason, and nephews Ben Cason and Buckley Cason. She also leaves behind numerous loving friends and family.
Libbey lived her life treating everyone with respect and kindness and will be remembered for helping others. She is resting now in God’s arms where there is deep peace. Goodbye for now, our beautiful girl.
The family is grateful for the excellent medical care that Libbey received at UPenn, NIH, and UVA and wishes to thank the medical teams who helped Libbey so much during her illness.
A service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton, with a reception to follow.
Libbey asked that donations be made to the Augusta Regional SPCA (P.O. Box 2014, Staunton, VA 24402) or to the American Red Cross (P.O. Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037-0839), specifically to support blood services.
