Laurence Alden Cooley, 86, passed away Monday, April 3, 2023 at the Legacy at North Augusta.
Mr. Cooley was born on May 22, 1936 in Washington, DC to the late Vernon Edgar and Elisabeth Delores (Rotkovitz) Cooley.
He was a proud United States Navy veteran being honorably discharged in 1962 after which he completed his education receiving a M.S. degree in metallurgical engineering and returned to the Department of the Navy for the next 30 years retiring in 1994 from the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC.
He was a consummate historian who had a special passion for American military history. During retirement, he again continued his education receiving the Degree of Bachelor of Theology and was a faithful member of Grace Bible Church in Staunton.
Mr. Cooley is survived by his brother, Vernon Patrick Cooley (Bonnée) of Fairfax; his sister, Vera A. Cooley of Seattle, WA; nephews, Kevin Patrick Cooley and Michael Edward Riddle; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Henry Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 13, 2023 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Roy Trump. Burial will follow in Shenandoah Baptist Church Cemetery in Verona.
