Lynn Glovier Hogg, 78, a respected educator, mentor, and veteran, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Summit Square Retirement Community in Waynesboro. In this community, his legacy of dedication to education, sports, and service will continue to inspire future generations.
He was born in Staunton on August 27, 1946, to the late James Gardiner and Davie Millicent Glovier Hogg.
Lynn dedicated over thirty years of his life to teaching and coaching at Fort Defiance High School, where he touched the lives of countless students and athletes, fostering a spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship that will not be forgotten.
Lynn received his bachelor's degree from Sewanee: The University of the South, which equipped him with the knowledge and skills vital to his successful teaching career. Lynn began his journey at Massanutten Military Academy before joining Fort Defiance High School, where he discovered his passion for coaching. He excelled particularly as a baseball coach, leading the varsity team to a remarkable state championship victory in 1982, an achievement that remains a significant milestone in the school’s history. In addition to baseball, Lynn served as a coach for football and softball, displaying unwavering dedication to his teams and nurturing their growth in athletics. For all these endeavors and more, he is enshrined in the high school's hall of fame.
Beyond his contributions to education, Lynn was a respected VHSL official and a small college football referee, embodying a commitment that spanned many years. He was a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins.
He was long-time, active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton.
A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Lynn served his country with honor during the Vietnam War. His experiences and sacrifices shaped his character, instilling in him values of resilience and integrity that he imparted to his students and colleagues alike.
Lynn is survived by his brothers-in-law, William "Ken" Kenly McAllister, Sr. (Beth) and J. Robert McAllister III (Anne). He also leaves behind his beloved niece, Mary Scot Boyce (Matt), and their children; his nephews, Andrew Kenly McAllister (Katie) and their children; and William Kenly McAllister, Jr. (Stacie), and their child; and George E. and Sara McAllister Joyner, his special cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Lee McAllister Hogg.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton with the Reverend William "AJ" Heine officiating.
The family would like to especially thank the staff and nurses of Summit Square Retirement Community and Legacy Hospice for all their care, kindness, and compassion over the months and years.
