Margaret Lee Roberts Halterman passed away on Thursday morning, December 25, 2025, at the age of 95.
She was born April 28, 1930, in Crozet, Virginia, to John William Roberts and Nora Smith Roberts.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Richard K. Halterman, and her sister, Betty Arehart.
She is survived by her son, Dick Halterman (Sally), and her daughter, Jennifer Halterman Keim (Greg). Margaret was a proud grandmother to six grandchildren: Ben Halterman (Priscilla), Abe Halterman (Blair), Molly Harper (Ryan), Josh, Seth, and Sarah Keim, and nine great-grandchildren: Annalee, Stella, Hattie, Georgia, Kemper, Lucy, John Fowler, Gus, and Jarrels. She is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Sensabaugh, and a nephew, Mark Sensabaugh (Beverly), and several other extended family members.
Margaret was a lifelong student. Her educational journey began after high school at Fairfax Hall and Dunsmore Business School. She went on to earn an undergraduate teaching degree from Madison College, followed by a master’s degree from the University of Virginia. Margaret was a beloved fourth and sixth-grade teacher for 35 years in Staunton, Virginia. Her desire to learn also drove her to take a masonry class at Valley Vo-Tech. In addition, her learning continued when, at age 64, she earned a Registered Nursing degree from Blue Ridge Community College, a skill she later used to care for Richard.
Beyond her professional life, Margaret cultivated a wide array of talents and interests. She was an amazing artist, creating works in a variety of media, from watercolors to mixed media. She sewed handmade clothing for Jennifer when she was little and continued to make clothes for her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing music, learning piano, organ, violin, and banjo. Margaret spent countless hours in her flowerbeds and loved to walk people through her gardens when they visited.
Margaret's life was centered on her deep faith. She actively engaged in learning and teaching others through reading and bible studies. She and Richard were devoted members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and later Victory Worship Center.
