Maria A. Ziccardy, 87, widow of Joseph T. Ziccardy was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 10, 2023.
Mrs. Ziccardy, daughter of the late Lily U. (Vivolo) and Joseph Sommerhalder, was born on November 11, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York.
She was married on June 26, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. Soon after their wedding Maria & Joseph settled in Staunton, Va and began their life of 68 years together.
She worked several jobs, including being a crossing guard before pursuing a career in nursing. Her career as a nurse included 13 years at Western State Hospital, 2 years at Kings Daughters Hospital, 5 years at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, and 2 years at Shenandoah Nursing Home.
She volunteered for many years in various capacities at Saint Francis Catholic Church, where they were members for over 65 years. She was very active at the church with the Catholic Daughters.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son, Joseph T. Ziccardy Jr. and daughter-in-law Debbie Ziccardy.
She is survived by a daughter, Marieileen McCauley; a son, Paul Ziccardy (Sue); a brother, Raymond Ziccardi (Virginia); eight grandchildren, Benjamin Ziccardy, Cheyenne Crawford, Daniel Ziccardy, Nathaniel Crawford III, Jonathan Crawford, Kristen Lee, Christopher Crawford, Sarah Guffey; a number of great grandchildren as well as two special friends Michele LePicq and Hugh Hennessy.
A mass to celebrate her life will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Staunton, VA on Friday January 20, 2023 at 3:00pm. Burial will be private.
