Mary B. Austin

Mary Lou Brookman Austin, 81, of Mint Spring, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

She was born on March 25, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Daniel John and Lula Effie Pultz Brookman.

She is survived by her son, Eric Daniel Walton; her daughter-in-law, Tiffany Walton; her grandchildren, Alex and Madison Walon; her niece, Melissa Conway; her nephew, Harry McGuire; her great-niece, Rachel Maturo; and her great-nephews, Joey Maturo and William Nuckoles.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Daniel Austin and her sister, Iris Janet Brookman McGuire.

Mary Lou spent her childhood in Mint Spring and made it her lifelong home. She lived simply and joyfully, with passions for antiquing, gardening, cooking, and family gatherings. Over the years, she held many jobs, but most loved her work as a home health care nurse and part-time waitress at a local bar, where she thrived on the energy, conversation, and community.

Known for her fiery spirit and warm personality, Mary Lou lit up every room she entered. She was sharp, street-smart, and proud of her Italian heritage, which she credited for her strength and resilience. No matter the challenge, she found a way through with grace and grit.

Her family remembers her as a tough, loving, and vibrant woman who fought many battles and never lost her spark. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery in Stuarts Draft.
