Mary L. Huppuch

Mary Lewis Huppuch, 87, of Verona, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

She was born June 27, 1937, in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late Carl William Lewis and Alice Jacobson Lewis.

Mary had a ready laugh and great sense of humor. She put others before herself. Mary possessed an ardent love of nature—both domestic and wild—and spent many hours of her retirement tending her garden and loving and caring for her pets. She also enjoyed making quilts for her family, friends, and various churches.

Mary graduated Radford College in 1959 with a B.S. degree, majoring in Home Economics. In 1960 she married Charles Huppuch and was a loving and devoted wife. Their roots were transplanted to various locations in Georgia and Virginia because Charles was a forester for USDA-Forest Service. Mary loved to show hospitality to family, friends and neighbors from near and far alike. Beautiful and welcoming was the home she chose on the Middle River in retirement with Charlie, her husband of sixty-five years.

Mary was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton since 1994, where she was active in several capacities, including serving as Elder on the Session and Moderator of Presbyterian Women. The Women awarded her an Honorary Lifetime Membership in 2011.

In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by a son, Christopher, and his wife, Dana Huppuch; her daughter, Maria and her husband Eric West; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Bovie; her four grandchildren Jacqueline and Charlton Huppuch, Jacob West, and Lauren Warner; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton with Reverend John Peterson officiating.

Interment will be private at Thornrose Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Ocean Conservancy (1300 19th Street NW - 8th Floor – Washington, DC 20036) or the National Wildlife Federation (PO Box 1583, Merrifield, VA 22116-1583).
