His family sorrowfully announces the passing of Michael Hughes Capaccio, 67, on Friday, September 12, 2025, at his residence in Waynesboro, Virginia.
Michael was born and raised in New Jersey. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and was a MALD candidate at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. His accomplished career in commercial real estate development included positions with Bankers Trust, Aetna Realty, Lehman Brothers, and Patron Capital.
Fluent in Italian and French and conversant in Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, German, and Spanish, Michael was known for his wit and could tell a great joke in French or Italian. Over the years, he made his home in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Connecticut, Russia, Italy, England, and Virginia.
He was fiercely proud of his children, disarmingly charming, and wickedly funny. Michael loved making people laugh and had a natural gift for performance, he even starred in his high school’s senior production of Arsenic and Old Lace. An avid reader and lover of good films, he was also a talented cook. Known for his uncanny ability to imitate anyone, or any sound, he would often employ this talent when phoning his little sister at work to the confusion and amusement of whoever answered her phone.
Michael was the adoring father of Frances Caroline and John Porter Capaccio, the adoring stepfather of Dana, and the proud grandfather of Lucy and Daphne. He was the former husband and good friend of Laura Morgan and the beloved brother of Carolyn Maria Capaccio.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Pasquale (“Pat”) and Marietta Hughes Capaccio; and his siblings, Claire Hughes Panebianco, Christopher Hughes, and Peter Paul Capaccio.
The family will celebrate Michael's life at a private gathering.
