Robert R. Mules

Robert Ray Mules, 91, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at his residence in Staunton.

He was born on October 15, 1933, in Cortland, New York to the late Franklin Kenyon and Lela Louise Mallery Mules.

Robert dedicated his life to his passion for farming and caring for dairy cattle, a love that began during his childhood on his grandfather's farm in McGraw, New York.

For forty-two years, Robert served as a field technician for Northeast Dairy Herd Improvement. His deep affection for cows was evident to all who knew him, reflecting not only his commitment to agriculture but also his respect for the animals that played such an integral role in his life.

Robert's educational journey earned him an associate’s degree in animal sciences from Cornell University, which laid the foundation for his successful career. A man who valued knowledge and skill, demonstrating a lifelong passion for learning.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Robert served in the United States Army in Mannheim, Germany. Of all his military accomplishments he was most proud to say he was a fighting member of the “Spearhead” – General George S. Patton’s famed 3rd Armored Division. He continued to carry the pride of his military service throughout his life, exemplified by the flag he flew in his yard, for his entire life.

Beyond his military endeavors, Robert was known for his diverse interests. His hobbies included writing, bowling, gardening, camping, and fishing. Remarkably, he continued to push-mow his lawn until he was eighty-nine years old. His love for music shone through as he sang in The Barnstormers, a men's quartet, from 1995 until 2010.

Robert was a longtime member of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Folly Mills, where he served as a vestry member. His devotion extended into youth leadership, as he took on the role of scout leader for the Weblos. Additionally, he was an active member of the American Legion, further exemplifying his commitment to service.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Leona Sarvey Mules, and their sons, Ronald David Mules and his wife, Jennifer and Gary Robert Mules and his wife, Artis; his brother, Douglas James Mules and his wife, Pauline; his sisters, Elaine Lucille Mules Sykes and Catherine Mules Lee; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Roger Duane Mules; and his sister, Barbara Jean Mules Ahrens.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
