Robert John Weiss, 88, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

He was born on April 9, 1937, in Pomona, California to the late Lorell Edgar and Sylvia Mae DeHart Weiss.

A devoted academic, Robert earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from UCLA and spent more than forty years as a professor at Bridgewater College and Mary Baldwin University. He was also a proud member of the Mathematical Association of America, remaining engaged in his field throughout his life.

Robert was an active and faithful member of Staunton Church of the Brethren, where he served in numerous roles over the years.

Outside the classroom, Robert loved bicycling, traveling abroad, and taking many cross country road trips. An avid outdoorsman, he found great joy in camping and hiking, most notably hiking the Grand Canyon five times. He also had a keen interest in photography, particularly capturing images of trains, with a special fondness for short line railroads.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Mabel Lou Weiss; his daughter, Cheryl Moffett and her husband, Lyle; his five grandchildren, Dr. Rachel Moffett and her husband, Aidan O’Connor, Andrew and Sarah Moffett, Joseph and William Childress, and their father Tom Childress.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Valerie Anne Weiss; and his sister, Shirley Ann Dawson.

A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the Staunton Church of the Brethren.

A private burial will be held at Barren Ridge Church in Staunton at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Staunton Church of the Brethren (615 North Coalter Street, Staunton, VA 24401) or to the Blue Ridge Food Bank (96 Laurel Road, Verona, VA 24482).
