Samuel J. Nelson, also known as “Sammy”, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 26, 2026.
He was born on May 22, 1955, in Staunton to the late Samuel Thomas and Helen Marie Truss Nelson.
Samuel proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for six years of active duty, followed by eighteen years with the Air Force Reserves, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. During that time, he also began a second career as a machinist with DuPont in Waynesboro, where he worked for over twenty years before retiring. Throughout his working years, Samuel also served as a corrections officer at Cold Springs Correctional Unit in Greenville and worked for Delta Air Lines at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport.
Samuel had a lifelong passion for aviation and an extraordinary love for jets and airplanes. His fascination with aircraft was something that never faded and remained one of his greatest interests throughout his life. He also loved the ocean and enjoyed traveling, especially taking cruises. When he wanted to slow down and relax, he could often be found enjoying the peace and quiet of Jazz in the Park on Thursdays at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton.
Above all, Samuel was a devoted family man who treasured time spent with those he loved. Family gatherings brought him great joy, and he cherished every opportunity to be surrounded by his loved ones.
He is survived by his sons, Thomas and Samuel Isaiah Nelson; his daughter, Danielle Nelson; his brother, Anthony “Tony” Nelson and his wife, Dawn; his soul mate and travel companion, Gloria Booker; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Floyd “Eddie” Edward Nelson and Earl Nelson; and his sisters, Rosetta Mae Nelson Williams and Sarah Frances Nelson Thomas.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with Bishop Theodore Payne, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 11:00 AM.
